Brooke Gai, Partner

For decades, Brooke has successfully invested in biotech and healthcare from start-up to early-stage, negotiated business across cultures, and fostered business development for clients and portfolio companies in the U.S. and China. She benefits from a broad, strong network of connections in  investment, government and industrial circles in both countries.

As a partner at Generation Origin, Brooke focuses on healthcare and life sciences globally and leads healthcare operations in China. She also focuses on environment and information technology associated with life sciences.

In 2006, Brooke founded China Hospital Group (advised by Pitch Johnson), which specializes in acquiring and managing hospital facilities in China.

Prior to that, Brooke co-founded Global Assets Investment, investing and advising in the life sciences for corporate clients in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. With her experience and connections in the U.S. and China, she successfully advised clients in identifying targets for cross-border technological, manufacturing, and commercial transactions and in negotiating the deals. Her investments included U-Systems and Cardiva Medical in the U.S., and Fuda Biotech and Qinghai Weda in China. Her decisive and timely investments led to a many-fold increase in capital.

Brooke was a founding investor in China Venture Capital Company, where she helped the management team invest in start-up and early-stage life science companies in China.

Brooke began her focus on private equity investment in 1994 when she joined Merrill Lynch to help drive the firm’s direct investment initiatives in China and later to work with the chairman of Merrill Lynch International on China strategy. Previously as an analyst at Tiger Management in New York, she was responsible for equity research and private equity investment, making successful recommendations on several biotech and pharmaceutical companies despite the severe industry challenges in the early 1990s.

Known for her technological and investment expertise, Brooke is regularly invited to speak at international conferences and government seminars about entrepreneurship, protecting life-science IP, cross-border technology licensing, and cross-border acquisition of operating assets.

Brooke has strong industrial and government connections in China. She was invited to sit on the China Medical Industries Expert Committee under the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, where she was actively involved in advising the Chinese government on healthcare reform. She was also asked to provide advice on China’s investment policies. Brooke was an expert committee member at the Ministry of Science and Technology. She also sat on the Underwriter Qualification Assessment Committee of Shenzhen Stock Exchanges.

Brooke holds an MS in Biochemistry from Peking University, a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Temple University, and an MBA in Finance from the Stern School of Business. Her academic interests were in molecular pathology, growth factors and oncogenes, and transcriptional regulation.
